PRESCHOOL NEWS

Abbe Rosner, Pre-School Director

February  2008

January was very busy and exciting at the preschool. We started the month with our first "Daddy and Donut" morning. All the fathers (and some grandfathers) and the children gathered in the social hall for breakfast, making kippot and doing some singing. It was wonderful to be able to share some time with the daddies.

On January 12th, the Preschool families gathered together for our first Havdalah celebration. The families had a light dinner together followed by a brief and beautiful Havdalah service led by Rabbi Shapiro. The children had spent time in their classes learning about the meaning of Havdalah, making their own spice boxes and practicing songs for the evening. A very special thank you to Donna Piskun, Nancy Saraisky, and Judy Jaffe for helping to make the evening so special. The true sign of success came on Monday morning when Jacob Gale, a Pre-K student, came in with his mother to purchase a Havdalah candle to use at home.

Tu B’Shevat was another fun day for the children. They all planted seeds of parsley, in the hope that they will sprout in time for their Passover seders. They sang songs and learned to dance to "Mayim, Mayim." They had the opportunity to “visit” Israel by experiencing the wonderful large, interactive map of Israel that was in the YAC. They flew to the country and learned about the various cities. They also had traditional Tu B'Shevat food--pita bread, dried apricots, dried pineapple, and raisins.

Now we are preparing for more exciting times in February. February is National Dental Health Month, and we will have our traditional visit by a dentist, our own Michal Herman. The children will learn the importance of good dental hygiene and will be taught the proper way to take care of their teeth.

Also in February, Jill and Scott Nadison will host the annual Shomrei Parents Dessert Party on Saturday, February 23. This is always a fun social event--a chance for all the preschool parents to really get to know each other.

Registration for school 2008-2009 and camp 2008 is now under way. Information is available by calling the preschool office: 973-746-5031 ext. 4. If you have a child of preschool age or know someone who is interested, please call for a tour of the school and a brochure.
