New Trustees Elected

Four members were elected at last month’s congregational meeting to three-year terms on the Board of Trustees. The new board members are Manny Schrager and Peggy Spivak. Craig Eichner and Carol Katzman, both current board members, were elected to new terms. Other changes in the synagogue leadership approved at the meeting were the appointment of Jay Sabin, as the vice president for legal affairs, and Eve Balick, as a co-vice president for activities. Mazal Tov to the new board members and much gratitude for those completing their service on the board - Noel Cooperberg, Larry Gottesman and Wendy Sabin.

CALLING ALL SENIORS

Please drop by on a Wednesday and meet the group. Try it, you'll like it.

A Note About Honors for Yahrzeits

Please help us to accommodate your needs.

A notice is sent one month in advance to each member who is observing a yahrzeit. The notice is intended to serve as a reminder, and to invite the individual to be honored with an aliyah to the torah on the shabbat immediately preceding the yahrzeit.

We must insist, however, that the following procedures be followed:

  1. Anyone desiring an aliyah must call the synagogue office no less than three days before the shabbat.
  2. Please indicate whether you are a kohen, levi, or yisrael

We will see to it that your request is honored.

HOWEVER, we cannot assure an aliyah to anyone who does not call in advance. We will make every effort to accommodate those who are in services on shabbat morning, even if no call was made.

WE ARE SORRY THAT WE CANNOT GUARANTEE AN ALIYAH TO ANYONE WHO IS NOT IN SERVICES BEFORE THE AMIDAH. Available aliyot are assigned during the shacharit service. We also have made it a policy not to add any aliyot to the prescribed seven.

ALSO, an aliyah is an excellent opportunity to celebrate a significant personal or family milestone eg. birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, graduations, college acceptances, etc. etc.

What better way to celebrate than to thank God, and share your joy with the Shomrei Emunah community !

Larry Schwartz, Ritual Committe Chair

MISHEBERACH LIST UPDATE

It is our custom at Shabbat morning services to recite a special prayer (Misheberach for a R’efuah Shlaymah). That prayer is recited during the Torah reading on behalf all of those in the congregation who may be ill, including friends, family and acquaintances.

Unfortunately, the list has become uncontrollably long. My true belief is that those who have asked for these prayers to be said have not informed us when the recovery has occurred. I have enough faith in God to know that the vast majority of those individuals have been healed.

The length of the list, however, has intruded upon the quality of our Shabbat morning services.

Therefore, at services on April 17, I announced that the list would be discarded and we would create a new one when it is necessary.

Therefore, I request that anyone who would like a prayer to be said should assume that the former requests are no longer registered with us and the Hebrew name of the individual will insure the recitation of the name at subsequent services.

I would ask, however, that you be as diligent in letting us know the good news of recovery as you are in asking that the name be added to the list. Thank you for your cooperation. –Rabbi Monson
